Interesting. I wouldn't have thought it would make any difference either.

Can't see why it should, unless they checked and amended any fault codes at the same time.

Or was the belt about to give up?

Hopefully, one of the guys who really know what they're talking about can throw some light on it....

Wow! 80,000 miles - was that the timing belt too? I've got 66K~ miles and I hear numbers like 60k, 75k, 120k for timing belts. Having a service this weekend but the garage (not VW) says my TB was due at 60k. Are they just looking for money? BTW it's a 06 140 6 speed 2.0 TDI SE. Drive 130 miles a day 5 days a week cruise at 75 mph all the way and getting 49 mpg if that has a bearing on TB change.

They are looking for money of course, but, following the VW service schedule, new timing belt due at 60,000.
You don't have to get it changed at a VW garage though. EDIT : I see you're not :)

1.9 tdi 105bhp...remapped...130bhp

yes 80,ooo miles we get 52mpg,

i have the old parts (belt etc) i can tell you it was in used condition..but could easily of done another 20,000

i was worrying about belt snapping (alot) its the first car i've ever needed to change it on.

it defo runs nicer again. seems a little more free reving... like its been re-tuned

I wonder if this is due to the battery being disconnected? I understand the car re-learns your driving style and resets some parameters.

On another note. Had my belt done at 60k. Originally the literature stated a higher cam belt replacement mileage - this was amended so some handbooks may be incorrect - but it is recommended by VW for 60k replacements.

I got my 55 plate 140tdi manual done at 80k. I checked with the VW dealer and they assured me that 80k was the correct time for the cambelt change. The guys at the service desk were all ribbing the guy I was dealing with as he's known as being a bit nerdy and having all this kind of data in his head. It all depends on the engine he told me, some being recommended at 40k! ouch!

Mine felt a lot crisper, torquier at lower revs after the belt change, wondered if it was my imagination but maybe there's something in it

The mileages quoted by car makers for cambelt replacement are a safety catch-all.

The ideal way to judge replacement is to specify the total number of revolutions of the engine (difficult!). A car that spends its life doing high mileages in top gear on motorways will not need its belt changed as often as one that spends its life in the lower gears.

VW's own service data for cam belts is as follows.
3c passat PD engine to 2006....120,000Km
3c passat PD engine post 2007....150,000Km
3c passat CR engine.....180,000Km
3c passat Petrol engine....180,000Km
This is the info they supply to dealers for the 3c passat.

this is a valid point indeed...i can tell you though the belt on my car was in worn..but good condition.... no deep cracks.... no outer cracks... not easily twisted 180 degrees.

i agree mileage is not a good indicator... running hours would be a better indication. my belt looked to have another 12mth left...max

This is a good description...crisper... my car seems to be less sluggish... but my mpg has dropped by 4 mpg....not really worried though as its only been the lead footed wife driving... i usually get mpg up at weekend for her to ware it down through week:p
