I have just puchased a Passat tdi 130 sport. My son had a Passat tdi and I remember it being quiet on almost all surfaces. This one is not so. I notice that the rear tyres on my car are Fate 550 advance, the front tyres are Michelin mxm . Could the tyres be the problem. I have never heard of Fate tyres before. Any help, please.

It must be your fate :biglaugh:
The Passat is rather noisy, there was a post on here about 10-11 months ago about it. Quiet tyres will make a difference, but it still won't be as quiet as some other makes. I recently bought 4 Goodyear Eagle F1s, and these are quieter than the Michelin Pilot Premacy it had before.

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon7.gifI've never heard of Fate tyres either and if I were you I would get rid of them as quick as you can. They may be great but if they were someone would have heard of them.
I've seen cheap tyres where the tread has come of in blocks from the carcass under emergency braking and as your life can depend on your tyres and brakes it's not worth skimping on either in my book.
I recently bought a Passat estate (petrol 1.8T) which has Good Year Eagle NCT 5's fitted to it, not my first choice but reasonably quiet. When these are due for replacement I shall go back to Pirelli P6000's which I had on my previous Passat (same model but saloon) which I found excellent all round tyres.http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Odd my Passat seems quiet regarding road noise. It has Pirelli's on the front and CEAT ?? on the rear.

Mind you my previous Accord had cheap tyres all round as I am cheap :p and although the engine noise was far less in the Accord the road noise was worse than in the Passat.
