A3 Radio stops working

I have an 03 reg A3 with the original stereo. Recently after about 20 mins of driving the radio appears to die & then I have a constant interference noise - which clicks intermitently. Even if you press the power button on the stereo the noise carries on. The next time i'm in the car the stereo will be ok for the first 20 mins.

Is something overheating? Seems strange it is fine on short journeys & only does this after the first 20 mins or so!
