Can't open bonnet on MK2 scirocco

Pulling the handle inside the car doesn't seem to do much.

I put the car in the air quickly and traced the cable down to the drivers side behind the lights and pulled the lever it is attached to.

This allowed the bonnet up on that side but it still seemed clamped down well on the other side. I had a look but could not see anything else obvious...

I'll put the car on some stands properly at the weekend and have another look but if anyone has any ideas?

Whats worked for me a lot when bonnet catches play up, is to have somone pulling the lever while I push down & pull up the bonnet near the mechanism area.
