Anybody used the cheap extended service reset tools advertised on the net, one advert said they worked only upto 2004 passats surely a mistake

Not necessarily as that was around the time the B6 came out which is use a different communication method that probably isn't supported by some of the tools.

The best tool you can use is VCDS. Where are you located? There maybe someone who can do it for a couple of beer tokens.

Dont risk it, long life service is a gimmick, do some research I think you will be convinced!
