We have a 51 Registered Octavia 1.9td Ambiente automatic. We started getting intermittent starting problems in July and have subsequently had a new starter motor, new ignition switch and new temperature guage sensor. Our dealers report no faults showing on diagnostics and each time we have had the car to them when it does not start, it starts for them (or the AA).

All warning lights come on and go off and when the key is turned- nothing. No engine turnover. Opinion is veering towards a sticky relay somewhere. the problem seems to occur when the car has stood in hot sunshine for a period (previously driven or not). If left long enough (sometimes with door and bonnet open) it then starts.

We are driving to Portugal on 28th October and not back until February. It would be great to resolve the problem before we go. Any genius's out there who can help?

I have had similar problems in the past what it turned out to be was the cable coming from the ignition switch wasn't making good contact with the plug on the starter motor. Also another time for some reason the negative earth from the engine wasn't making contact with the car body and ultimately the negative terminal of the battery, this was solved by connecting an extra cable between the engine block and the car body to act as an earth.
