This is a follow up to an earlier thread.
My car is a 2002 passat TDI with 130K on the clock - regularly serviced etc.
My problem started a couple of weeks ago during motorway commute. After travelling a few miles. Car would repeatedly miss (felt like car was hiccupping). This happened a couple of times during the week and each incident would last for a couple of minutes (pressing the accelerator the car would accelerate out of it - but would again hesitate when throttle released). Last week this was more frequent and twice this was followed by very rough running - car felt like it was running on two/three cylinders and the brake warning light came on. Turning ignition off and then restarting seemed to clear this. The first time it happened I get a lot of black smoke too.

This week the hiccupping has been more frequent and last night driving home I got the lumpy running/running on 2 cylinders about 5 times - coasting in neutral and turning ignition off and then on seemed to clear it (except once when I had to repeat the process). I then slowed to about 55 mph and it did not re-ocurr.
I Took it to local VW garage this morning and they analysed and have told me that it is indicating a fault with No 1 injector. They have quoted about £869 for this work and also say they won't know until they look at the injector whether there is damage to the head which would be very expensive.
I've rung round and immediately got a quote from another VW main dealer that was about £150 cheaper than this and their spares guy though it most unlikely thyere would be trouble with the head.
I have also been told by an independent that a common fault with these passats is the injector wiring and it is more likely to be this than an injector fault.

Has anyone any advice on what to look for and check with regards this. I really don't want to book into a main dealer (who need to order the repacement injector up front) only to find that it is a wiring fault.

Help would be appreciated.

2 things;

Get the fault code readings on here so see if anyone can help you.
Look here (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=8359&highlight=injector+loom), if it's the injector loom, it's ~ £50 + fitting, which will be a lot less than £900.

I've just got the fault diagnosis log from the VW dealer and there appears to be more than one fault code. My main concern is the misfiring lumpy running one though.

I'm no mechanic, however the fact that it says 'electrical malfunction in electrical circuit' would tend to suggest the loom.

I'd like to thank everyone for their help and endorse the value of this forum.

After spending £50 on diagnostics, I was told by my main dealer that the fault appeared to be No 1 injector and if this was required it would cost £870 to supply and fit. At the same time they could not rule out wear of the head which if found would cost a lot more.

I rang around to compare costs and rang a second main dealer who quoted me £690 for the same work, but also said it would most likely be the loom (the first main dealer did not say this - although they added it to the diagnoostics sheet when I said I was going to pull the car because I'd found out the loom could cause problems).

I rang an independent who quoted about the same price as the second main dealer and their mechanic stressed that it was highly unlikely to be the injector and would almost certainly be the loom.

I bought a loom for £45 from the second main dealer (he told me he sells about 12 of these a year), fitted it in about an hour and have since travelled about 150 miles with no problems and given that it was almost continually hesitating it seems highly likely that it is fixed.

My point here is that apart from the considerable discrepancy in price, there was nothing visually wrong with the old loom and so unless they were going to dissassemble the engine, change the loom, reassemble and then try it out before replacing an injectot (which I very much doubt) I most certainly would paid for a new injector.

Incidentally, they also said I needed new front brake pads at £128. I got them replaced by an independent for £60 right across the street.
