Here are some shots of our "new" black Golf after a wash and polish.

Let me know what you all think.

Blue 8mm HT leads were off the old Golf, and I think look really good, new rocker cover has stopped oil leak so engine looks a lot cleaner now :) Also gave the engine a simple wipe down to remove grime and used a fibre pen to remove tiny rust spots and touched up.

Excuse the dirty windows, I wanted to get some shots whilst the sun was still out.

Exhaust and alloys were robbed off our old 1986 Golf.
Ideally I would like a set of BBS alloys, but money says otherwise!
Also I think the cracked reg plate ruins the look of the front end, so am looking for a new one... any ideas where I can get one?
Hope you all like it. :beerchug:

Very shiney!! What products did you use? As for the number plate, most motor factors do them.

Thanks. Took a fair bit of work. Wasn't actually intending to polish it, but when I washed it the water evapourated so fast it left horrid stains all over, leaving it worse than before I washed it! So ended up polishing it.

I simply used Autoglym car shampoo and conditioner to start with, but with the two bucket method. (One for rinsing off the sponge, the other for applying nice clean water).

Then I used Autoglym Super Resin Polish, applied lightly with Autoglym Perfect Polishing Cloth, then buffed off with Autoglym Hi-Tech Finishing Cloth.

Hope this helps.
Cheers for the tip on reg plates. Am hopefully getting a new one tomorrow.

Thankyou very much mate.
She is a beaut.
:biglaugh:

Carburettor needs a bit of meddling, but the bodywork is absolutely mint, Also, although the exhaust isn't original, it's subtle enough, and doesn't sound like a touring car, which I am very happy about.

Thanks to all for your comments. Really appreciated. And to get a comment form Elitedetailer has made my day. :D
After two weeks the water is still beading beautifully on the paint, which I'm quite chuffed about.

Got a couple of engine issues to sort out, but are only niggles, and fortunately nobody can see them when the car is just parked! :biglaugh:

The wheels to be honest are crud. They suit the car quite well, but they came with the older Golf and were unfortunately already quite badly curbed, but the standard wheel trims that came with this one were also s*** so changed them over anyway.

Saving for some BBS RS alloys, as that would finish the look off perfectly, as would a new registration plate.

lovely car. amazing what a bit of effort can do. but, that was 5 months ago:aargh4:, what does it look like now??? hopefully you got the scabby front number plate sorted out.

Lol, scabby number plate still exists :o

But I gave it a wash to get rid of all the salt last week and it still comes up beautifully.

During the wash... The o/h took it whilst I was unaware.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2746/4335583161_89cc7e8521_o.jpg

Big bum. Excuse the rubbish quality, was taken on my phone and didn't relised it had blurred until I put the pic on the computer. :(

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2711/4336329082_eb7ca684c3_o.jpg

Still wet, but was only a relatively quick wash.

Check out this spark plug though! This was new in November, but the old carburettor was still in place. New carb fitted in December, but a month with the old knackered carb left it looking like this!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2797/4336330014_164941ac94_o.jpg

Cleaned up and replaced with new ones soon after.

And finally, our nice shiney new recon Pierburg 2E2 carburettor.

What a difference it makes!

Hope you like.

And the reg plate is next on the list of things to do. Alloys will be refurbed as we have decided they suit the car well and BBS ones would only be suitable for summer use.

like it, except the number plate:p. it amazes me how shiny the paint is after all these years. they certainly built those mk11 golfs to last. imho, they are one of the best cars ever built. nice carb as well.

Well swmbo is off work tomorrow so will hopefully get a new number plate from VW in Bishops Stortford tomorrow. I know Halfords do them, but I would prefer it if it had VW on the little bit of writing (picky I know).

But yeah, the paint is fantastic. Even better than my Clio, which is 8yrs old. And my mates Fiat Brava marks even if you run your finger along it. Even our previous Golf had amazing paint, it was Jade Green, and had a few scratches, and a spot of rust on the rear arch, but when polished, the paint came up brilliantly still!

So we are dead happy with it, not a spec of rust anywhere. Done 132,000 miles too, which also shows the quality of the paint! And we have discussed, if something horrendous goes wrong with the engine, then we would definately source another engine for transplant due condition of the body.

thats spot on mate , well done, you don't need a clio, with that on your drive -- :biglaugh:lol

Cheers! My Clio is my work horse though, the Golf is the one that constantly need teeny bits of tinkering. But the Golf certainly does look better on the driveway and it actually turns heads when driving down the street! Never had a car (my Dad's included) that does that!

But yea, its fab. Will get some better, more recent pics up soon. :)

I've had quite a few mk2's over the years, and after seeing this I want another one. I can't believe how good the car still looks after 5 months - amazing :D

My elbows are aching just looking at this!

Surprised you only used those products, I've spent much more time/money on cleaning my cars and not got them looking half this good. Probably woth sealing it though as the AG polish doesn't offer much protection

These were taken just before our journey to Seaford, on which it would be impounded (long story, see Chat About Anything...)

After battling the elements on Friday, was umming-and-arring as to whether I should wash it, as it was threatening rain all day. At 6pm, I looked at the forecast, and horrah! It showed clear skies. So off I go, armed with 2 buckets, one for shampoo, and one to rinse the sponge, and a bottle of autoglym super resin polish, and finally, a bottle of Boiled Linseed Oil.

I was the car, just start the polishing on the front wing, then... It rains.

So, I wait 30 minutes for the rain to subside, and in the process, give the inside a thorough going over (including back to blacking the black trim).

Rain stops, so away I go vigorously with a chamois to clear the rain, I pray for no more rain, start on the wing again, and... you guessed it. Rain again... :zx11: 10 minutes pass, so I clean the boot out and sellotape and glue the headlining back up (bodge I know, but better than it was!)

Rain stops again and blue sky appears, so out comes the chamois again, and then time to polish. I go over the whole car and then try the Linseed Oil on the bumpers and black rubber around the windows etc. WOW. By the time I had finished, it was completely dark lol.

I'll let you decide. (These were taken just before setting off for Brighton, the morning after the big clean), but I think it looks pretty darn good!

The car that keeps on giving, I always enjoy looking at pictures of it.

What is this about it being impounded ?

macmillions

Thank you very much Col.

It's a great car, and the paintwork is better than many modern cars I have seen.

As for being impounded, it's fully explained here.

These are the first interior shot I have taken of the car. Pretty good nick, apart from a cigarette burn in the drivers seat, evidence of smoking stains on the lining above the driver, and yes, typical headlining sagging at the rear.

FINALLY decided to splash out on a pair of nice shiney new plates from the local VW garage.

Unbelievable how a pair of clean plates make the car look so much nicer. Especially when the front one was as scummy as it was!
