considering buying an audi 100

hey all i am considering buying an audi 100 cd from my neighbour. he says that the speedo doesnt work so i am assuming that it is the sensor in the gearbox. is this a logical guess if so how much for a do it ya self fix and how hard is it. If not the sensor what else could it be. is there anything else i need to look out for?

could be printed circuit in dash(dry soldered joint ) common fault

My previous 100 2.0E and current turbo quattro have both had intermitent speedo which is fixed temporarily by a hard tap on top of the dashboard. I believe it is connections inside the instument binicle and was/is a common fault. Mileometer carriies on working even when speedo has stopped.
