I've got vag com 409.1 installed and the cheap blue OBDII cable I got from ebay for £15 just won't read any codes. The driver is installed properly, and the interface is detected/ready when I plug up the car.

WHen I do an auto scan, it just says no control modules found. Any ideas?

The car is a 2003 Passat TDi sport.

I'm stumped, do I need a better cable? :o

You need a proper VCDS cable for that feature, don’t be surprised when a £15 cable won’t work as well as one costing £250.

But it won't read any codes at all, i.e. it's as much use as a chocolate teapot. Surely the £15 cable must be able to read some codes?

I've tried scanning through a few of the individual modules like engine, ABS, etc but it still says no modules found. :1zhelp:

I second that Q.

also look at the tutorial on the ross-tech site.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/main_screen.html

as you click into functions it tells you the limitation of the shareware version. for autoscan this is printed

Shareware Limitation(s): The unregistered version will scan a very limited number of control modules and then stop.

Yeah, the I tried with the ignition on and engine running, still wouldn't read a single code from any of the modules. :(

VAG-COM/VCDS is the singular most useful and best value for money tool I have purchased in 30 years of working on cars, period. In my day to day work as a VAG specialist I use it more than any other tool I own, including my 3lb copper lump hammer. Without it I would simply cease to function as a VAG mechanic.

With 3 VAG cars in the family VCDS has paid for itself many times over.

Could be a blown fuse on the DLC connector. Could be an aftermarket radio. Could be a dicey fleabay special. Could be the drivers were never installed properly. Could be many more possibilities. But, these are the more common ones that we get to look over and over and over and over because people choose the down and dirty method of trying to do VAG diagnostics. And we are to blame because we put a shareware version of the software out there for those who need to try it before they buy the real deal. Anyway, look at those four possibilities.

Oh yeah and why not ask the fleabay seller for some help. Oh yeah, that's right. They don't have a phone number or any kind of tech support.
