Tuned to suit the specific characteristics of the Q7, the 4.2-litre, eight-cylinder diesel engine brings the same 326PS output, delivered at 3,750rpm, but holds a 110Nm torque advantage over the A8 installation, taking its total to an impressive 760Nm at just 1,800rpm – 60Nm more than its nearest competitor. At just 520 millimetres in length, this high-tech unit is impressively compact for an eight-cylinder, and also unusually light, helped by its weight-sparing vermicular graphite cast iron block.
Fed by two intercooled turbo chargers with variable geometry turbines, and employing the latest common rail direct fuel injection system with state-of-the-art Piezo injectors, this mighty engine manages to maintain fuel economy at in excess of 25mpg while punching the spacious seven-seat SUV to 62mph in 6.4 seconds and on to 146mph.
In keeping with the rest of the Q7 range, the new 4.2 TDI channels its power smoothly to tarmac or turf via standard adaptive air suspension with electronically controlled damping and roll stabilisation and an adjustable height span of between 180mm and 240mm, ensuring great comfort even on testing terrain. Naturally, the latest generation quattro four-wheel-drive system with 40 / 60 front-to-rear torque split is also on hand to boost grip to seemingly physics-defying levels.
Up to seven occupants can enjoy the ride in the cabin’s three rows of seats, and thanks to a total of 28 seating and loading configurations, there is also the option to free up a maximum of 2,035 litres of load space.
Limited Edition version also available
The new Q7 4.2 TDI - like its 3.0 TDI, 3.6 FSI petrol and 4.2 FSI petrol counterparts - will also be available in conjunction with an exclusive Limited Edition specification. The Q7 Limited Edition combines all the luxury equipment fitted to SE versions with an off-road styling package, a wheel upgrade to 20-inch Five Double Spoke alloys (from 18-inch Five Parallel Spoke) and tinted privacy glass.
SE specification adds enhancements such as Cricket Leather upholstery, electric seat adjustment and seat heating, while the off-road styling package includes wheel-arch extensions, restyled front and rear lower bumper sections, running boards with complementing door protection strips, unique exhaust tailpipes and front and rear under-body protection plates.
Individually, the options fitted would carry a premium of £4,375 over the price of the Q7 SE model, but at £1,800 more than their SE equivalents the Limited Edition models bring a saving of £2,575. Limited Edition prices start at £42,625 OTR, with the 4.2 TDI Limited Edition at £51,890 OTR.
