Can anyone come to my aid with a reasonably priced replacement ABS/ESP module? Otherwise I am apparently facing a bill of £1500. The symptom is a dashboard light of a car skidding and the ESP button is permanently "OFF" and does not respond to being pressed!

BBA reman cannot repair these units as of when I spoke to them about it last week. The good news is that some of the ABS/ESP units have suddenly dropped in price by nearly 50% as of last week. Check with your dealer to see if they have come off back order now and for the new price, some have come into stock this week and some have been halved in price due to the demand and the uproar the problem has caused.

Between a rock and a hard place! VW Customer Service require me to have a Diagnostic Test at a VW Main Dealer, at a cost of £85, in order to establish exactly what is wrong with my vehicle, despite the fact that the evidence is in front of me on the dashboard. Even then my claim for some compensation may not be considered favourably, so I will be a further £85 out of pocket and still faced with the whole repair bill. Far from showing any good will to a loyal customer of 40 years, they seem determined to make even more money out of my misfortune. :zx11:

You have to have a diagnostic read done first but that could be done for much less by an independent and if they aren’t going to contribute then the job would cost less at a specialist anyway. How old is the car? Some of these pumps have been halved in price recently.

This is a common problem throughout the VAG range. My 2006 Audi also has this issue - it is all over the internet. VAG like to make money out of the diagnostic check. They charge you £80 merely to tell you that the substandard part in your car has gone wrong and to put it right you will have to cough up the price of a family holiday.

A3?

It isn't just VAG though; Ford, Mazda, Honda, GM etc are all suffering from these faulty Teves units.

Did I say it was? And why is it relevant that other manufacturers are suffering, does that make VAG less culpable?

Sorry, only trying to give you some background to the problem. If the car is less than 4 years old and was bought from Audi and always serviced by Audi they will often help under goodwill. I must admit I am going to drop right out of discussions on this problem as I am tired of the blasting I get when I try to help people be informed. You are obviously a very angry man so I will leave you to it.

Oh Peter....

Now you have upset Crasher, I fear we will no longer benefit from his pearls of wisdom!

He has been an excellent fount of knowledge.

Hi Crasher - Have you got an example part number for an ABS Pump that has recently dropped to half price?

1K0 614 517 AE BEF £782.35 so no quite as cheap as I thought but less than the £1200 odd that they used to be and they have 845 in stock, so it is obviously a very problematical unit. If VAG, GM, Ford etc are going back at Continental group about this it will be costing Conti a fortune. When people get angry about this, imagine how VAG and other manufacturers feel when they have literally millions of cars out there with this fault and many more ready to develop it. In 25 years of working on VAG cars I have never known an issue like it.

Hi, my '06' Jetta has recently came up with the same problem, ESP always off and unable to switch it back on. I certainly don't have £1400-1500 to burn this close to xmas so I'm thinking of leaving any repairs until the new year. Is this advisable? The car drives, handles and brakes just the same as it always has and I've managed perfectly fine without 'ESP' for a lot of years before I had this car. I guess my question is really, is this fault likely to get worse and if the ABS pump is faulty, is it likely to start affecting the cars braking system?
Any help appreciated
Thanks

VW told me does not affect brakes but i dont know if it will pass an M.O.T with that light on perhaps CRASHER could shed some light on this subject.

Well as the car is only 2 months out of warranty (grrrr) I still have 10 months left on the Mot. Give me a chance to save up I guess...

No it will not affect the brakes, it is not an MOT failure (yet) and as long as the car does not get into a skid situation it will not affect you. Then again as you slide gracefully sideways towards that solid looking tree you may begin to wish you had had it fixed…

I had this fault come up driving away from my 3 year MOT. I suspect (but may be wrong) that braking hard on the rollers triggered the fault. My fault occured 2 days before the end of my warranty. A call to the excellent Stafford VW got me booked in and diagnosed and I managed to get the ABS/ESP pump replaced under warranty - phew!

I was told that VW will sometimes make a contribution towards the bill but even that would have still been ruinous!

Gents

My dad had this problem with his Golf Plus approx 2 months outside the cars 3 year warranty.

He was expecting a £1200+ bill.

He got it done for free as VW have apparently upped the warranty on this part to 4 years.

Hope this helps
