I have been with the same provider Tiscali for 4 years and not had any problems until 4 months ago since then I have had a few, To make matters worse I had to do all the leg work i.e. Chasing and I was always told we will call you within 48 hours which never happened.

OK let me get to the point I am looking for a new Provider and would like your opinions on other providers and there services

Cheers in advance

ive been with BT for 2 years without any problems. the broadband seems to work all the time, which is quite suprising since i live in the middle of nowhere and have to climb a tree to get a mobile signal. i pay £25/ month for unlimited download. i know you can get cheaper, but as i say, it always works.

I have been with Zen Internet for the last 2 years, UK based, UK Based Tech support... if you ever need them..

Not the cheapest but I think they are excellent.

Got Virgin 20meg.
its not bad to be honest. I get 18meg ish 24/7.

Had a few problems with been put on a high usage or 'throttled' connection, but this was all sorted with a phone call.

I was a happy ZEN customer for years, they are only 20miles away as the crow flies, but they did not roll out LLU in my area, so i had to switch to BE.

Been with them for 2 years now, and there has only been one occasion when its been bad.

Ive heared they don't throttle their 50Mb connection at all..but thats pretty expensive at the moment.

Im on a 50mb virgin and they do throttle your bandwidth down to about 15mb if you download/upload over 2gb in a 2 hour period.
I play on online radio stations at the weekend and download dwarf porn in the week so i noticed this wuite a lot.
I made a quick phonecall and said my son"not thaqt i have one"plays games online and downloads maps and crap all the time.
They said ok no worries sorry we thought you were online pirate and stopped it.
I finished my phonecall just in time to download the new Transformers film too.........:D

But as an isp they are very good, never had any trouble and on form im getting 48meg.

Yes, you can as broadband provider, but not their TV service.

Yes, you can as broadband provider, but not their TV service.

That was a joke.

Oh and surely if you cant get tv via a cable then you cant get broadband via a cable?Unless they hire BT's phoneline off them like all the other non DSL isp's do?

Ah...point taken ;)

and yes, VM do do Broadband via BT Telephone line, I've got it in Cumbria, and the service has been faultless so far.

Traffic shaping/bandwidth throttling is automated, I find it odd that a phonecall to their customer services would 'lift' an automatic bandwidth limit.

I'm curious to see your UL/DL rate though, any chance of a speedtest (www.speedtest.net)?

You will surprised how adaptable Virgin are, i have 2 mates that work for them and i know all the tricks now.I used to get 20mb for free using an old box and a mac adress they gave me,same with the virgin tv (which sucks btw) but they started catching on every 3 months or so,so i got sick of it and just bought it instead.

Look up on the net you will find loads of stories of people that have had their limit lifted.

I actually have a speedtest png in my sig on another site i use with 68mb on it but i will do another when i get home :)

LMAO! So you and your 2 mates were ripping Virgin off, without them knowing?

Do your 2 friends not value their jobs or their clean criminal records?

I'd suggest you're more careful about the details you impart on public forums ;)

Im not overly sure what a pubic forum is but when i start postin on one i will be sure to let you know lol;)

Oh and not just me and my 2 mates, everybody that works for virgin was in on it.
All you need is a cable and a mac adress of somebody in your area that has just been installed, which is easily obtainable if YOUR the one installing it as Virgin men do.Then hey ho jobs a gudn.

As for talking on a public forum about it there are actually several phBB forums dedicated to the subject so im pretty sure i don't have anything to worry about :biglaugh:

The topic was to discuss broadband providers, not ways to defraud them.

Steer this back to the subject at hand please.

If you are off the Virgin Media cable network then you cannot get cable TV or cable broadband, however Virgin Media do a service for telephone and broadband by DSL instead. If you go to the Virgin Media website there is a postcode checker that will advise you on the availability of the services. If you can't get the VM Cable service then something like samknows.com will be able to better advise you of the rough speeds available in your area (this is mostly limited by the BT infrastructure).

Bandwidth throttling is automatic and dependent on the package you get. At this time 50Mb/s is not throttled although it may be in the future. This is dependent on a number of factors and beyond my knowledge / ability to comment on. I'm also not going to comment on the 'I pay for xxx service and if it's throttled I'm not getting it' type of argument.

As to the 'free' plans to get VM broadband, that obtaining services by deception and is being cracked down on, it's the equalivent of siphoning fuel from someone else's car. Get caught and you face jail. How do I know this? I work for Virgin Media and am involved (on the peripherty) in the fraudulent activites area.

I'm with ID Net. They are aimed at the same part of the market which Zen occupy - people who would rather pay for a quality service than put up with bad service for little money. Slightly cheaper than Zen and I haven't had any issues since I switched from BT.

If it helps, I'm on BT and fairly happy. I would say completely happy except for the dodgy wireless modem/router they provide (BT Home Hub) which seems to drop both wireless and broadband connections willy nilly. I have a Netgear ADSL router which I used for a couple of years when I was with Pipex, and this was always reliable, so I may well switch back to using this (although I will then lose my hub phone).

My options are fairly limited, because my exchange does not support LLU, so the best I can get is ADSL+ 8Mbit (which in reality works out to between 5 and 6 Mbit connection). My street is not cabled either, so Virgin Cable is not an option for me.

When I moved away from Pipex/Tiscali (because it looked like they might go bust at that point), I narrowed my options to BT and Demon (Post Office was the best deal, but had dreadful reviews, so I avoided them). The BT call package swung it for me.

Regards,

MF.

.

I would agree Tiscali supplied Router is ****. I had a Netgear ADSL for 3 years it went pop 2 months ago bt I still came back now using Netgear N-Series router no problems at all.

For me with Broadband its all about the Customer Care someone has to be better than Tiscali or shoud I say Talk Talk now
