View Full Version : Worrying Noise

I was driving my 1998 1.9TDI Sport at around 70mph today - it was quite warm - when I heard what sounded like air escaping suddenly from the offside front tyre accompanied by rumbling and some rough riding for a few seconds. I assumed that this was puncture so I pulled into a layby but could find nothing wrong. I set off again and the noise repeated itself momentarily but I haven't heard it since. Other than this the car seems to be running quite normally, albeit that I've obviously driven it pretty carefully since!

Having thought about it the noise sounded rather like a pressure relief valve opening and when I got home I realised that the aircon had stopped working, with the airflow temperature being the same in both the 'Auto' and 'Econ' settings on the climate control panel. I also noticed that no condensation was being deposited on the drive, which is what happens normally when the weather is warm.

Is it likely that this noise was down the aircon compressor failing, or could this have been caused by something else? The aircon was serviced and recharged just under two years ago. If it is a failed aircon compressor what is this likely to cost to rectify. Many thanks.

You'll need to have a proper look at the system, but it does sound like something had happened to the compressor. I would have suggested clutch/belt but the hissing sound suggests whatever happened was serious enough to rapidly depressurise the system.

The dealers charge around £1100 for the compressor but there are recon units around for a third of this:

To cut a long story very short I've since had the car checked out by the local VW garage who couldn't find anything wrong except that the aircon, whilst still working a bit, needed to be regassed to bring it back up to peak performance. I've now had that done by a local mobile aircon specialist and everything seems to be fine, albeit that I probably won't ever find out what caused the worrying noise I heard driving along the A14! GSD
