I was driving my 1998 1.9TDI Sport at around 70mph today - it was quite warm - when I heard what sounded like air escaping suddenly from the offside front tyre accompanied by rumbling and some rough riding for a few seconds. I assumed that this was puncture so I pulled into a layby but could find nothing wrong. I set off again and the noise repeated itself momentarily but I haven't heard it since. Other than this the car seems to be running quite normally, albeit that I've obviously driven it pretty carefully since!
Having thought about it the noise sounded rather like a pressure relief valve opening and when I got home I realised that the aircon had stopped working, with the airflow temperature being the same in both the 'Auto' and 'Econ' settings on the climate control panel. I also noticed that no condensation was being deposited on the drive, which is what happens normally when the weather is warm.
Is it likely that this noise was down the aircon compressor failing, or could this have been caused by something else? The aircon was serviced and recharged just under two years ago. If it is a failed aircon compressor what is this likely to cost to rectify. Many thanks.
