View Full Version : burnt clutch or intercooler problems

I have a 2001 Golf GTTDi and I'm having what I would describe as power surge problems when I'm travelling at speeds above 50mph.

The rev. counter jumps rapidly (say, from 2000 to 3000 rpm) and then settles down. This may happen in any gear from 3rd to 6th, not just when I don't change down to overtake but also when I sellect a lower gear to pick up speed more rapidly.

My local VW garage tells me I may need a new clutch as it would appear to be at the point of failure. I can see no other sign of clutch failure - no smell of burning clutch plates. (current milage is approx. 60,000)

I notice that I have oil in the intercooler pipes from top to bottom, which I see from other threads may be a source of complaint too. Are the symptoms I describe and the oil in the intercooler pipes related? (By intercooler pipes, I mean from the alloy at the top by the turbo to the rubber pipes at the intercooler.)

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance, Iain
