My a3 1.9 r reg 110 tdi, seems to have lost some of it's grunt?!, i changed the tuning box, as the car seemed to be back to the power it had before i put the box on. It was just the same with the new box. So next i tryed changing the air mass, thinking that might be falty. No, still lacking power. It feels like the boost might be down, as it used to pin you back in the seat at about 2000rpm, but now it just excelerated smoothly with out the sudden surge i used to get. any ideas please let me know. Thanks

Hi Toby. Don't want to be the bearer of bad tidings but what you describe sounds like turbo failure. If you pull the boost pipe off the turbo and get a finger in, you should be able to rotate the compressor easily. If the turbo rotates freely, check the pipework. If the boost pipe was already off, you've found the cause! If the pipework is all intact, check the turbo wastegate, sometimes the actuator gets biffed and won't open the gate. If the compressor won't move at all or if it's stiff, then you're in need of an exchange unit. Sometimes the bearings seize from lack of, or poor oil feed. It's mega-important to change the oil regularly on a turbo-diesel (hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs!) as bearing failure can be caused by too-old oil lacking the viscosity it had when new. Even though the service book says every 10000 for an oil change, I tend to do one twice a year, depending on mileage.
Hopefully you'll not have to spend too much dosh. Let us know how you get on, and good luck!

Hi Leo.

Many thanks for the reply. I don't think theres any thing wrong with the turbo it's self, as the car still goes rather well, probably slightly better than an untuned one, but not as fast as it was. There may be something in what you said about the wastgate, but as i haven't had time to check it yet, i don't know. I was thinking it might be down to one of presure switches/sensors i can see on the bulk head. i'll let you know that i find out.
Many thanks.

Hi

This sounds like a problem i'm having with my 110 tdi. Before Christmas it was loosing water but suffering no loss in power. The garage (independant VW/Audi specialist) advised it needed a new head gasket and that was fitted. Ever since then i've not had the power i used to.

The car has done 106 000 miles and a new MAF was fitted about 10 000 miles ago. The diagnostics have been checked and they're not showing up anything.

Also, i've had mixed messages about what work should have been done when the gasket was replaced. Did the head need skimming? Should the timing belt have been changed at the same time? As niether of these were done.

Garage seems to think that it is an electronics problem.

Any ideas?

I have found a vacume hose hangind the back of the engine. It isn't attached to enything. Can't find any thing to attach it to. If i put my finger over the end when the engine is running th engine stops. I have ordered a haynes manual, and hope it will say where it is suposed to go. It comes from the two vacume switches on the bulk head. I hope it has something to do with the lack of power, but it may not.
