Whistle sound from engine - 1.9 TDI 130

Hi, I have a 1.9 TDI 130 with about 85k on the clock, recently it has developed a whistling sound that increases as you accelerate and then peaks when you lift off and muffles out after a few seconds. It almost sounds like a police siren, a few people in my car have acutally thought the police were nearby. Has anyone ever come across this before and is it something that can be easily fixed? I am new to German Diesels having owned French Diesels before and I have never had this before.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hi Sam, I know this sound s obvious but have you checked all of the belts, e.g. power assisted belt, fan belt etc. Could be that it’s not tight enough or even worn.
