VW Golf Mk4 1.6 16v - DUU Gearbox???

I'm thinking about getting a low milage 2001 1.6 16v SE but I have heard scarey things about the DUU gearbox cracking etc. Is this a big risk - is this model likely to have this gearbox?

im unsure what you mean by the DUU, i can only presume this is a model of box fitted. i can, however, talk about my brothers 1.6 16v se, his gearbox has failed no less than 8 times, the last time was after a recon box was fitted. through no fault of his own, the box appears to keep failing, chances are he just got a lemon, but i too, have heard of the issue you mention, not sure how prominant it is though.:( if you're buying from a dealer, the failure of the gearbox will be covered by warranty anyway for the duration of the warranty.
