hi all,

a few days ago my oil warning light came on (the yellow display on the dash with 'min' written next to the oil can). anyways got out the car checked the oil on the dippy and it was fine i.e. you could tell there was more than min in the sump. sat back in started it up and the light was still on.

now thing is i regularly check my oil and did so on the morning the light came up. level was just below max, well above the min line. next morn checked it again and the levels just below max so topped it up a little and the light went out. few miles of driving and it came back on :zx11:

cars booked in tomorrow for a cam belt change and a regular service so i rang the mechanic up explaining the problem. he said its most likely to be the oil sensor thats at fault and whilst the cars in he'l change the sensor.

is it likely the sensor is at fault?

appreciate your input :1zhelp:

I had a similar issue and so did my sister, check the following:
1. the dipstick has 3 areas a: below the crossed area (Minimum mark) b: the crossed area (That we all asume is normal) c: above the crossed area upto the point where it thickens....This is the full position just on the ridge.

2. If the light comes on again, leave the motor running. open the bonnet and the filler cap and replace and close the bonnet. Then switch off and top-up as above

3. Also check the dipstick pipe top. On my sister's car it was broken and the dipstick went in to deep showing a false full reading.

We have a 2.0 petrol sedan and a 1.8T avant

cheers for the reply!

getting the oil sensor replaced as we speak aswell as 'long life' service and cam belt. the light was still on when i took it to the mechanic so il see if the sensor was at fault i.e. if the light comes on again i'l know its not the sensor but another fault. in the past i topped the oil up (light went out) and the light came back on within a few miles of driving. the reading on the dippy was above full and i had atleast 5.5 litres of oil in the sump. the dip stick sits fine so presume thats all ok.

I suspect it could be the sensor as i spoke to a audi speacialist and he said the same 'audi's are prone too but its more common to go on a golf.... time for a new oil sensor matey'.

il let you know how it goes when i get the car back tonite.

Don't know what car or year you got,but read many times about oil light coming on & changing sensors & turns out to be the bonnet switch so interested to hear the outcome.

If the light comes on because your oil is low and you've topped it up.The car knows that the bonnet has been opened and shut & presumes the oil level has been checked so resets the light.Have read about having to take switch out to bridge contacts to get light out & also disconnecting battery did same thing. As i say , it's just something I've read & it seems to crop up every now & again. I presume they didn't say what they did to get it out.

1st, thanks for the prompt reply.

Its an A4 03 saloon. 1.9 TDI 130 bhp.

When I pull the release lever at the footwell I just hear a clicking noise. There is some play with the lever as in left & right. Tried ever position but it's like its not making the proper connect to the release switch and/or cable connecting to the bonnet open/close system.

So I cant even get the bonnet to open the normal inch. Where normally you then pull the level at the Audi 0000 symbol...

Make a little sense ?

how are we, im fast at the replies because i should be working but im highly bored. lol

right, ive asked the guy wat he thinks could be causing the problem, and he's unsure without looking at it, which could prove difficult to you as we live in blackpool.

my suggestions are to either speak to audi because it seems to me to be a bit of a nuisence, that MUFFIN guy seems to be having similar problems.

it must be a common fault, audi should be able to help you over the phone,

if not i'd possibly try a coat hanger, but could be messy
sorry cant be of any further help.

Hope you have got your bonnet working as heres a tip.Ignition on lift bonnet then shut the bonnet and remove the ignition key for 60 secs. The bonnet switch is linked to the dash insert for the service intervals and needs to see open closed cycle with the ignition switched on to reset the yellow warning can low level sensor.

Thanks guys.

Got sorted with the bonnet. Turned out the release catch was loose. All ok there now.

Still have the "Check Oil Sensor" yellow light on though. Checked oil level via dipstick and there is plenty of oil. Above half way. Don't fancy paying an Audi dealer a couple of hundred for this as it's prob something still, any ideas anyone ?

Tried the tip of engine on, open/close bonnet and key out for 60secs... No joy... Any other methods ?

Cheers
