I own a 84 Jetta, fuel injected, 1.8, all stock. No mods of any kind.
Have owned for 8 yrs. Replaced head gasket last year. Ran excellent after, but now has developed a weird starting problem. Doesnt want to start after run for one time a day. will restart like wheen gooing to different stores, where the car is parked of 30 lmin or so. but if you drive the car, then park it for 4 hrs, it wont start, it \tries, but coughs and then will not ignite. the starter works, it turns over, just no ingnite of fuel. so I supose it is not being sent, the fuel.
i checked the spark, with the plug out and touching the block, spark good.
also, when i remove cube #18 relay, that sometimes, allowes the car to start??
I live by Seattle, any help would be super. Thanks.

Hi,
Sorry your having problems but I had a similar problem with my 84 1.7L jetta deluxe. I did several things to it: Changed the fuel filter, removed and cleaned the Warm up regulator (the gizmo on the front of the block with two braided lines to it and a connector) when I got it dissasembled I cleaned it up with some carb cleaner a blew it out real good and the reassembled it and put it back on. Also, checked all the fuses and replaced all the even seemed to be bad or had gotten hot. And very important and I kinda just noticed this, the two wires going to the altenator were wore to the point of breaking. They finally broke and the car went completely dead and literally drained the battery of all power almost instantly, I had noticed that they were a little fraid a month earlier but still connected to the altenator and the car run really rough and thought it was something else was causing the problem. I fixed the wires and the car runs great now. The jettas have got to have good connections to run properly alot of folks have had problems with these wires and will not run well with out making a good connecting. So, take your pick what ever I did in the process worked. Haven't had any problems since I did these few things. I did them all at once so can't tell you which one exactly worked, except for the two wires on the altenator. It ran sweet after I fixed those two wires.
Hope this helped,
C.Collins

Thank you, for the tips. My alternator went bad 2yrs ago, and i had one from a old rabbit put in, at a vw garage in the middle of nowhere by the ocean. seemed to work great and still does, but the wires do look old and rotten. so that is where i will start.
Thanks again!
Bruce.
