Hi,
Can anyone else with the same car tell me what their fuel consumption is. I'm getting between 18 and 21mpg depending on where Im driving. Personally I think its a bit low even for this engine. I've even tried driving like my dad but still only get an average of 22mpg if I'm lucky. I can get 27 if its just motorway driving at 75mph. Can anyone tell me if they think this is normal or if I may have a fuel consumption problem.
Cheers

To be honest it's totally dependant on your driving style but I do think there may be an issue though. When was it last serviced?

I always get around about 32. On the M-way I get about 34, through town about 27-28.

If booting it then lucky to get 20.....

Mine's a manual gearbox by the way.

Thanks for the reply. Mines got the tiptronic box but I still dont think it should make that much difference. Yours sounds like what I thought mine should be. Maybe I should take it in to be looked at. It is due for a service, the only thing is I dont like paying the audi service prices as it has now done 155000 miles and so it seems a lot of money to spend on a car that's not got a lot of value anymore.
Thanks for the info anyway.

You'll be better finding your local Audi specialist and getting them to do any work on it. It'll save you a heap of money.

155,000 miles - just broken in.

Sounds about right to me....I've got an 07 2.0 TDi multi and it's way thirstier than my old 05 manual 2.0 TDi. I have had a 2.4 V6 petrol multi for a couple of weeks in the past and that was giving me around 22mpg....which was slightly scary.....

I think it's the auto that's responsible

I don't think it should make any difference but mine is also the more powerful 30 valve 2.8.

Did you find any problems with yours?

I had an A6 2.4 quattro tiptronic and I drove it really really carefully from Scotland to Yorkshire and I managed 26mpg.

Around town in city driving, being as careful as I could, it could go as low as 18mpg and if I wanted to have a bit of fun it once went to 14.6mpg

I took it to many garages including three audi main dealers and they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I now own a 2.7T A6 tiptronic, which gives me 29mpg on a motorway, 32 if I am my dad, and an average over all of around 25mpg.

I do think that the 2.4 is underpowered if you carry more than a matchbox around especially if you use your dual zone climate control and can be abismal for MPG.

I fuelled up the other day and reset the trip computer. Since then I have just been driving around town. The computer is showing an average of 14.5mpg after 40 miles. I used to have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 before this car and even that managed 19mpg as anaverage.
One thing which has sprung to mind is that my brake pad warning light is on. This is because when I had new pads fitted the sensor connection was completely different on the new pads and would not fit. I've read on here about sensors having an effect on fuel consumption.Does anyone think this may be my problem.

Are your brakes binding by any chance?

There are some sensors in the exhaust which record the amount of unburnt hydrocarbons (Or something?) If these are not working, the computer will richen up the mixture, giving you a low MPG.

You will need to take it to a garage which has the plug in kit to see if there any engine management faults.

The temperature guage is working, isn't it?

I really don't understand why anyone would have the 2.4 v6 over the 2.0 TDi. You've got to be really anti diesel to go for the 2.4. They cost the same to buy, the TDi keeps it's value better and you get a lot better mpg. Additionally the diesel is much more flexible than the v6. I know you get another 40bhp on the v6 but it doesn't seem able to use it very well. When you compare that to the same powered 2.7 TDi, the TDi just blows it away.

I've only had my 2.8 tip for a week but have amassed about 750 miles already. First tank was half city and half highway = 21mpg. 2nd tank has been mostly highway and looks like about 27mpg. I did replace the air filter after the first tank of gas. I tend to run about 70-75 mph on the highway. Only time will tell, 90 mile roundtrip commute everyday means a lot of petrol through the tank.

Got it sorted now. It turned out to be the lambda sensor on bank 1. I was quoted £140 by an audi specialist and it would have probably been double that at the main dealer, however I found a sensor for £25 from All Audi in Gloucester and fitted it myself. I am now getting about 22mpg around town and 27mpg on a run.
Thanks for the replies.

I still think that's poor.

I'm currently getting 27 around town and that's sitting in traffic going to and from work. Plus a bit of fun now and then. I don't think I'd get much more, maybe 28? Out on a run it's always at least 32.

Is yours an auto? Mines manual and I'd estimate that for 1 tank f fuel I'm getting about 70 miles per tank more distance than you - and that's if it's all town driving. Mixed driving it's more.

sorry - I just read the post agian and I see yours is auto.

Maybe that is the best it does?
