My car is 2003 and I have had from new always serviced by same main dealer.
Following a loss of turbo power I was recommended to have a diagnostic check for £59. The dealer says that this revealed that I needed a new turbo, cost £1500. I also needed 4 new motors for the aircon. Cost £880. I obviously queried whether there were any other options and why had 4 motors failed simultaneously and why had I not noticed.. There was no alternative and the motors failed from general wear and tear.

As this was to be the third £1000+ bill in a year, somewhat against the grain, I took my car to a local VW/Skoda specialist who was not a main dealer.

The fault proved intermittent so he kept the car for 3 days trying to reproduce the problem. He succeeded and the problem is resolved. Two pipes had come apart. (I am no mechanic). He reconnected them using an extra length to avoid a repetition. There was no discenable problem with the motors. His bill was £57.50 but I am being unfair. His bill included VAT and a diagnostic check!

Are main dealers too ready to take the easy and costly option?

The short answer is "yes"!

Is this Heron at Newark?

No not Heron. It was a local Skoda dealer. Lots of praise for Bede House Garage in Newark.

That level of incompetence verges on breath taking! Also probably criminal. I wonder what their response would be if you raised this issue with them via a complaint.

Thanks for the rec re Bede House. Could be useful. To put in a word for Heron, I have had my last 3 VWs looked after there. They have always been good with me, so no complaints at present. Worrying about your "local Skoda dealer" though. However, there are 3 to choose from within 20 or so miles......

Sadly its more and more common. The number of garages/mechanics who diagnose things only via fault codes is on the increase.

In fairness, main dealers do have larger overheads than most independents, which they have to pay for. However, ripping people off to that extent is pushing the envelope a bit too far.

Under the previous owner, my Skoda had ~£3k spent on it at an independent Skoda specialist in Spondon, Derby. They replaced all sorts of needless parts, such as fuel pump, injectors, pistons and rings and many many more. Then they gave him/her the car back, still not working. But they still charged him or her £3k.

I bought it for £620 and fixed it with a new turbo and manifold at £350! :biglaugh: Had to replace the exhaust as well as it was full with oil and wouldn't drain. So just when you think you've got it bad, there's always someone else worse off! :D
