hi, appologies for any ignorance i have on this topic however i have been looking into getting a audi a3 1.8t. i have noticed that there was a engine revamp about 1999 where the engines power was upped from 140 to 180 (ish). i was wondering what parts were different between these two versions, and also any identifiable ways or distinguishing between the 140 and 180 bhp models.

also on a side note what is the difference between the s3 and the 1.8t engine, is it completly different or is it again, just different parts?

hi there.

yes there was a engine revamp around year 2000 which was around the same time as the "facelift" A3's were released. Basically the older engines were cable throttle and the newer one's were drive by wire (dbw). power output was the same at 150bhp. The revamped engines had a slightly bigger turbo an some emissions related stuff like Variable Valve timing (vvt), exhaust gas recirculation valves and secondary air indution. the revamped 150bhp engines are exactly the same as the 180bhp engines apart from the ECU map.

The s3 engines were practically the same as the revamped 150bhp engines apart from lower compression pistons, twin intercoolers and an even bigger turbo. power output is 210-225bhp depending on the year

hope this helps.
