Early last year was engulfed in smoke while waiting at traffic lights and with assistance from VW Audi forum found the likely problem was oil mist separator. Being a Sunday in France there was no chance of getting a replacement, so I removed and cleaned the original part and replaced it (a bitch of a job) and it sorted the problem immediately. I was told by a friend that the internal fibres of the separator swell in time and that the filter would really need changing for a new one. So in April 2008 when I went to England I had the OMS replaced at Helston Garages with a new VAG part. I have only driven about 11000 miles since and exactly the same symptoms have returned with heavy oil smoke when on tickover with the engine warm. To me this does seem rather soon I thought they should only need changing once in a blue moon, the niggle I have is was it really changed at all. I would appreciate other users thoughts.
