Knocking coming from diff!!!!

Help!

Just had my 1.8T quattro on the ramp and there is a knocking coming from the diff????

I was told to change the quattro oil and filter a couple of weeks ago as I did'nt know when it had been done last. Could this help with knocking noise or will the damage already be done?

Have heard of fresh gearbox oil remedying noises on these...
Is it a constant knocking, or more an occasional rattle...
Do you get anything whilst driving?

If it knocks when you rotate the wheel each way, that is correct.

I am yet to change the oil but have the oil and filter to do so. I was woundering that if I change the oil will it stop the noise?

I am getting a drone when I am driving (thought it was wheel bearing at first).

My mate is a mechanic but wants a second opinion on what to do.
