its a cirle with an i in the middle and 2 lines either side which i guess are brake shoes. Will try and post a pic.

The yellow one? Sounds like the low pads warning.

Yes, front pad wear warning. Sometimes a broken wire in the harness from the strut to the body, often on the left for some reason.

The symbol is red in colour, I cant see the wear sensor on the pad, does work off the caliper piston?

Ah, if it's red then it's not the wear indicator. Have you checked your power steering level? Not sure about the A3 as I've never had one but it could be an indicator of low hydraulic pressure.

Red (i) is low brake fluid.

Hi have you checked you brake switch is functioning correctly?

I had to replace my switch the other day.

Not a big job 30 mins max and a new switch less than £10.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Some useful background information on how the switch works:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?cmd=print&id=1158315

A SUPERB How to guide on replacing the switch:
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=144456

(You dont need to remove the bonnet release switch!)

The switch I removed (A3 1.6 Sport) was black and the one that replaced it was green.

I hear its a common problem that afects the whole VAG group.

had a similar problem, a3 1.8 auto, couldn't get it out of park, called AA he checked brake lights, no brake lights, had warning symbol on dash, when pressing brake the light on gear selector didn't go off like it does.

AA man adjusted the brake switch, all ok now, he said if it happens again get a new switch.
