Rear wiper with a mind of its own

The rear wiper on my 2002 A4 Avant Quattro has a mind of its own. It sometimes switches itself on, other times it won't work from the switch, and if it does it stops when it wants to, not when I switch it off. It also parks itself halfway across the rear screen. Does any one have a fix for this please.

Sounds like a motor issue ,
if its like the B5 the contol unit is in the wiper motor and the washer tube gets it wet and buggers it up .
