hi guys,
i have a 1998 a3 1.8 and the clock is on 77,000. the timing belt needs changing as it hasn't been done yet. what kind of price am i going to be looking at, as i have a quote for 250. the garage also recommended that i cahnge the idler at the same time. is this necessary?

thanks

The garage should use a kit, preferably a genuine one (this includes the idler). I paid £60+vat for a timing kit from the dealer and then got my local garage to fit it for £120+vat.

ok,
they mention something about the timing belt eyelets on the kit, but they didnt say the idler is included.
is there another kit i can get then?
is it best to go to a dealership for this?

it cost me £450 from audi, but make sure you get the tensioners and water pump replaced at the same time.

the timing belt is one of the most critical parts of your engine.
