Hi all

Just noticed that my front cigarrette lighter isn't working, doesn't light the lighter (doesn't stay down) and doesn't charge my sat nav plug. However, the one in the boot does.

CHecked fuses, swapped them around and all ok. any ideas?

thank you!

Hi,

I have got thew same issue and never got around to fixing it,

I will have a look through some posts as i did post it and got some answrs, plus i think i have some PDF documents which i will upload.

Then.. hopefully we will be able to fix the issue once we get some ideas on the fault.

cheers

Rick

ah cheers Rick, that'll be great. i got the car last week, ex-fleet, and can't believe the last owner didn't use a sat nav.

look forward to seeing some fixes!

just checked the connections underneath the ash tray and they're all ok, but tested and theres no live feed. I thought the front and back cigarette lighters ran off the same fuse? (42 in fuse box by drivers door http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6875&highlight=fuse)

They do share the same fuse, does the rear lighter work?if not check if you have power on the fuse 42.

Turn the side lights on and check the cigarette lighter illumination bulb, this is to check if the earth on the lighter is ok

I would say then the fault is a connection in the main wiring harness this is a soldered joint, and don't ask me where it is,i haven't a clue,Rather than split the harness,i would run a new wire from the rear lighter.

i've got crap experience in electronics, how do i split the feed to the rear one? is there a plug or shall i get a real man to sort it out for me :)

All you need is 2 scotchlocks and a piece of wire

It looks like it might be easier to run it from fuse 42 if this is your recovery option.
Only thing I can see in the diags is Item J29 which is a blocking diode running parrallel to the cig lighter supply "purpose I dont know" and maybe this is the fault as otherwise it is straight line supply from fuse 42 then T 'd off to the back from a junction in the harness.

I saw the diode, but i can't understand it's function,as you say it runs parrallel to the supply wire,But it, also has a connection to the rear lighter on the earth side, and he says it works ok,so a bit strange

yeah boot 12v works fine.

The 12v supply in the boot runs from the same supply line as the front and rear cig lighter.

hang on, sorry, when you say rear cig lighter, where's that? are you not refering to the boot one?

although if all three run off same then doesn't matter...

Hi.

I had a similar issue.

I plugged something in to my boot socket and something went pop, it was the bulb in the applience (a little torch item)

I thought nothing of it and continued to use the car as normal, this includes charging my phone off the front socket.

When i fitted the towbar, it was then i found the fuse that supplies the boot socket had blown.

My car is a 53 plate MK5, according to my haynes, the wiring may have changed for cars built from NOV05 onwards but it still looks like seperate fuses.
