Hi I have a October 2002 Passat TDI Sport speed box. I have read some of the threads telling me of the comon noise problems with these boxes is there a way to fix it without replacing things for example addatives i have heard about something called AMETECH does anyone know if this works. Or if I need to get the gearbox repaired how much will it cost. Also is the diff a Limited slip diff? or does the ESP work electronically.

Thanks for any help ROY:1zhelp:

Hi, you may have seen my post RE 03 Passat Sport with a noisy gearbox.
I've had varying quotes for a repair, anything from £400 to £700, but they said that price is for bearings only, if there is any damage to the gears etc, they would have to source another second hand gearbox, which could be an additional £300.
Removal and refitting is about £200
Alternatively breakers are selling second hand boxes for around £500, but then you can't be sure of the mileage or condition of the box you buy. If you did take this route though, you may be able to sell your old box to a refurb company for upto £300.
If you have any alternatives I'd be glad to hear them, as I'm about to put it on ramps and start stripping the box out.

Cheers

Ade

I too have a 2003 130tdi sport estate, its a lovely car with a similar problem with the box, its very notchy and creates a wining noise (especially when cold) Im off to see my local VAG specialist tomorrow to get his opinion, he also mentioned the flywheel as a common fault too, any ideas ? I would be interested to find out what the outcome of yours is. JW
