My wife was driving our A3 1.9 TDi sport in 6th @ about 80 when she said that she noticed a knocking noise coming from the engine, then within a few seconds the engine stalled and she pulled over. She tried to re-start and it ran for a couple of seconds with the same noise before stopping.
By the time the RAC man had recovered the car to our local garage I managed to have a quick look under the bonnet but there was nothing obvious, i.e oil leaks, broken belts (visible ones), plenty of oil. but there was a smell of hot / burnt clutch. tried starting but there's that loud knocking when turning over which I think is coming from the engine not the gearbox but can't be sure.
Anyone seen anything like this before? although I'm pretty sure that noises like this are gonna be expensive. :-((
