Hello Folks.

My '99 110TDI is due a cambelt change and I've started to ask around for prices. It needs a new electric motor for one of the rad fans as well, but the first quote is £495, which seemed a bit steep from an independent. This price includes £65 for the belt kit, £29 for a water pump, £125 for the fan motor:( and 3.5 hours labour.

I thought the fan motor was a lot cheaper, but I've been told it comes as a unit with the housing and is not a separate motor:confused:

Can anyone confirm this or advise the part number? Of the fan motors, this is the offside (drivers side) one, which I presume is for the climatronic.

Your thoughts and advice would be very much appreciated.

Gaz, I may be totally on the wrong track but is it anything to do with this;

Rather ironically, I've been to GSF twice today and it didn't cross my mind on either occasion. Should point out this quote was for OEM parts.

Such an airhead:Blush2:

You're on the right lines, but the bigger fan, numbered 06, 07 & 08 in your schematic can be seen on the right in this pic:

But it's the other, smaller fan that's being noisy. Looks like it's held in the housing by three nuts and bolts:

But I doubt there's the room to get it out without much more dismantling:(

You actually get the whole assembly that is held in with one screw !
Release the cable that runs to the connector beside the PS reservoir, you will have to drop the undertray and grovel underneath; then undo the single screw and rotate the whole assy a few degrees and off it comes.
There was enough room to do this on my 1.8 petrol and from your photo there looks like the same amount of room on yours.

...one screw !

:bigeyes2: :bigeyes2: :bigeyes2: Blimey!!

Cheers Lex:D

I wonder if I can just replace the one motor once it's off??

Sorry, I do not understand what you are trying to achieve ?
The other fan is driven by the engine via a viscous coupling.

Ahhh....all becomes clear:Blush2: :Blush2: - 'there are none so blind...' springs to mind:Blush:

Allow me to explain how I've got lost:o

This fan (the leccy one) gave it's first warning sign a few months ago with the odd tinny squeal at start up. It was relatively easy to identify where the sound was coming from.

As it went downhill, I noticed a few seconds of rumble after switching the engine off. So it got a bit more of my attention and that's when I first noticed play in the shaft. But I've put off dealing with it over the winter coz I don't like playing out in the cold.

Now it's whistling and rumbling in competition with the engine, so has my full attention:( Viz: at no point have I paid any attention to the other fan whatsoever - to the point of not even noticing where it was mounted even though it's patently obvious in the pic I've posted above:Blush2: !!!

So I've been completely on the wrong tram tracks and had presumed that it was both fans that made up one 'unit' which I'd struggle to get off the car. Idoicy is a skill I've developed to a highly tuned state!

Lex, your explanation of what is patently obvious puts a whole different perspective on it:D

What am I trying to achieve? Well, even though I'm no stranger to being a spannermonkey, I'm disinclined to do the cambelt myself, not having done a Passat one before. But if I can reduce the bill by doing the fan myself (possibly with a GSF assembly) then I'm going to feel much better with myself about farming the job out to someone else.

Thanks for your help and comments Lex:beerchug:

Thanks Sam, but you must still be tired:p The viscous coupled fan is fine, it's the leccy one that's going supernova soon.

Incidentally, my local VW want no less than £200 for this unit:mad: GSF £64 and they're on the shelf. Go figure!!??

Well, I got to it today. And if I'd listened to Mr Haynes I'd have taken the rad out:( Yeah right!

It was a bit fiddly, but I managed to do it all from on top. It wouldn't have gone down as there was insufficient room, even if i'd removed the undertray.

All I had to remove was the air intake pipe and a headlight cable:D

It came out this way:

There is was....gone:

Feeding cables through for the new 'un:

And bingo...!:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/gasadana/Fannewoneinplace.jpg

One point of note; the lower of the three locating tabs has a locking pin on it. It won't release unless you lift this pin no matter how much force you use:o Then when you flick this pin it all but falls out :approve:

Hardest part without a doubt was feeding the new cable through a retaining clip at the bottom centre of the rad housing. Thankfully, my good lady wife is considerably more slight than me and she could get her fingers to it:beerchug:

Took about an hour, including 15 mins oblivious frustration over the release pin. Doh! Lovely n' quiet now.

Good job Gaz, but one question,

What on earth made you paint your engine bay that colour! :biglaugh:

I did mean two questions too.

Did you manage to convince Mrs Gaz to take photographs of you working or did you have your right arm bent around and behind you holding the camera?!

I try and get Mrs Sam interested in cars but so far, she doesn't care one iota.

You've been on the fire-water again, haven't you:D (although I'll take it as a back-handed compliment!)

And.....

'Sally's gonna kill ya....
Sally's gonna kill ya!!!':biglaugh:

Coz it was me behind the camera:D :D

Oooh hang on, I've just got to go and get her........tee hee hee!!!;)

Wait a second.

You made your wife work on the car while you stood and took pictures....

I'm impressed, Mrs Sam usually points and laughs. If the camera comes out during car work she can be seen pointing, laughing and tutting

I'll PM you for some tips.
