View Full Version : Any feedback on the 1.4 80ps?

Just wondered if any of you good people have the "basic" 1.4s Mk6 with the 80ps engine, and if so what you think of it? I know the tsi is the one to go for but it's likely to be a bit out of my price range, and besides I was used to a 1.2 Polo! If you've got one, how is the fuel economy and performance? Thanks :approve:

I don't but is 80ps enough power to pull the Golf along? Are you not better off with a late Mk5?

I drove a mk5 with the 1.4 80ps engine and it was ok for me. Just wondered if anyone had a mk6 with this engine and how they were getting on with it. To be honest, I'm tempted to wait for the new Polo with the TSI engine to see how it goes.......

Hi, don't have this engine in a Golf but I believe it is the same engine that is in my OH's new Polo. It is very economical and smooth but is a little short on power for me (any overtaking needs to be very carefully considered). The Golf is alot heavier so it would struggle more, I guess it is would be best to take a through test drive.

Haven't driven it myself but have heard someone else say it was horribly slow, but it shouldn't be any worse in the Mk6 than in the Mk5, as the weights are pretty similar.

The new Polo sounds like a great car: if I had to choose between a 1.4S new Golf and a 1.2TSI new Polo, I would jump at the Polo. Unless I could get a 6 month old 1.4tsi Golf within my budget by that point.....

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely wait to try the new Polo. I don't need a car as big as the Golf but I do want the refinement. From what I have read, the new Polo is very quiet, the 1.4 (85ps) will be more powerful than the one used in the Golf and the 1.2 tsi engine is a little belter. :D

1.2 TSI Polo should probably cost about the same, and it would be the better choice

The 1.4 80PS in the MK5 and MK6 Golfs is not particulary brisk. Its adequete arround town but really strugles at higher speeds and can get a little noisy and tiring.
