continuous tone from engine compartment

just gotten hold of an 2007 a3 2.0 tdi 170ps sportback dsg s-line. quiet chuffed with it, or will bit till i've sorted a few points. dont have an owners manual so just checking if the continuos tone from the engine is normal - some warning that something is live perhaps??

I'll get one shortly, just in case it's an engine is ****ed don't drive warning. no lights though - not hugely concerned about it. a fuel pump?

realise i'm new and asking a good few q's. once i get some miles on the car i'll be in a better position to contribute! lol
