My 1.9 SDI Polo Variant has begun to judder like mad from cold and run fairly rough when warmed up.

It started a couple of weeks after the timing belt, water pump and tensioner were changed by an independant specialist. It's been back four times since and cost me a(nother) packet all to no avail - It's still as bad. The garage, however, says alternately that there's either nothing wrong with it, or that it's nothing to do with the original work they carried out.

I have been advised that it could be the valve timing, pump timing or even a failed dual mass flywheel. The latter could make sense because the clutch and gearbox failed a couple of months before the timing belt change but it was fine until the events described above.

The car is a 2000 model year Y chassis Polo Classic Estate 6K model with and AGP engine which is really a Seat Cordoba Vario in disguise which is why I’ve posted this here. If anyone has any advice or has resolved a similar problem I’d be interested to hear.

After a bit of delay for a holiday, i finally got around to getting the car checked out. I took it to a local non-specialist garage that I used before I got VW fever. I gave him a quick run through of the car's recent history and he spent a couple of hours testing it.

What he identified was low compression in the number 2 cylinder. It produced around 250psi compared to around 400psi for the other three. Given the events leading up to the problem, he reckons that something allowed the timing to slip out following the belt change and this has probably damaged a valve or two.

So it looks like I need to consider an expensive repair: he reckoned £700 or more depending on how much damage had been done.

if the timing had slipped it would have damaged more than one cylinder it carnt just slip on one it would slip on all four

Sounds fair enough, but what else might have caused it?.

if its just on one cylinder then it could be a valve problem or a piston ring problem,if you do a wet test on the cylinder and the compression goes up i would suspect a ring problem, but if it stays the same i would suspect a valve problem

Sounds like a plan. Is that something I could do myself if I can borrow a compression guage? And if so, how?

i dont know what your ability is so i dont know really, but if your mechanically minded then it wont be a problem
