What could it have been? (Glass cleaner)

When I had my mk4 a friend of mine sparyed some kind of glass cleaner / polish on the windows (this was about 2001). The stuff was brilliant and kind of like Rain-X but wasn't. After the treatment the water just beaded off the glass but the good thing was it lasted for about four years. He said he got the stuff from South Africa while he was out there and hasn't seen it in the UK( or hadn't at the time)

Any ideas what it could have been, or any recommendations for glass polish?

No idea what it could have been. I like the carlack glass sealing kit - comes with a cleaner and a sealent - doesn't last 4 years though!

if you put this stuff on your windscreen (rain x), will it damage the wiper blades?

Not in my experience. You shouldn't be using the wiper blades with Rain X though, otherwise you'll just wipe the Rain X off. The Rain X will make the water bead and stream off the windscreen. Its hopeless when you're travelling at low speeds though.
