I've bought my S3 today 2001 Y reg

Drove it home from the dealers and when i gave it a bit of stick and it got over 60 mph the ECS and ABS lights came on and stayed on and turning the car off and back on again cleared them.

Its been doing this all night and at some points the lights were coming on straight away even when the car was stationary.

Then I went inside for a bit and when i came back out it had improved slightly and became intermittant again.

WHat is the likely cause of this ?

Thanks
James

It will definatly be a fault in the ABS/ESP system, most likely a faulty Lateral or Longitudal sensor fault.(these are the most common faults to be stored) it happens when the sensors base setting (usually around 0) deviates above 3-4 either way which corresponds to the ECU thinking the car is moving sideways or forwards when it is actually doing either of these) there are other components that can cause ESP to fault such as steering angle and Yaw sensors, even faults in engine can cause the ESP to switch off and put fault light on! Best check the fault memory of both engine and ABS/ESP and see what is logged.

ECU says it is the longitudanul sensor

according to the chap i bought it from (who is sending me a replacement sensor) he says there are 2 sensors one on each side of the cabin .

which one is longitude which one is latitude ?

Longitudal sensor G251 is located on the left hand A pillar, the glove box will require removal for accesss. It can be checked via measured values in ABS (03) and measured value data (08) channel 6 zone 1, reading while stationary should be close to 0m/s2 +/-0.5m/s2. If this is out then most likely the sensor is faulty. The new sensor must have its zero setting initiated after fitment by means of a VAG diagnosis tool or VAG-COM etc, this is performed by entering ABS(03) then login (11) enter 40168 and enter that (this will allow access to perform direct setting, then enter basic settings(04) then channel 069 to zero the G251 sensor. exit ABS ECU and erase any created faults and all will be good!

I know this sounds a bit complex but is is fairly sraightforward if you are familiar with the VAG diag functions. If in doubt make sure the sensor is fitted and set up by somebody who knows what they are doing or you will be back to sqaure one with faults again. If it was a VAG dealer who provided you with the sensor then ask them to fit it maybe? hope this helps...?

just on the back of this.. i dont dispute the above comment from Nexus, with it been an S3, (great bit of info there..) however if the A3 didnt have an onboard comp.. ECS (EPC) and ABS light means MAF issue..

Thats put a spanner in the works.........

Best bet... get her on to VAG-COM and read the codes..

I didnt buy the car from a VAG dealer.
The dealer i bought it off is sending me the sensors to get fitted myself.

Would i be able to fit them myself or does the programming need to be done at the same time as fitting ?

I am assuming this can be done ONLY by a VAG dealer or do other places carry the correct equipment for doing this job ?

Thanks for your help btw.

hmmm, in reply to RickT i was under the impression that the codes had been read?and that a G251 sensor fault had been logged in the ABS ECU? I know that a MAF issue can cause a G251 sensor issue but this is only created when the engine is hesitating causing irregular Longitudal pulses to be picked up, i advised to also check the data blocks when stationary to see if these are out which would again rule out any other possiblilities such as bad MAF.
The G251 can be fitted by yourself Effect but you will need to get it on to a diagnostic machine to erase stored faults and set the zero setting of the sensor or else the ECU will still be running of the old sensor data.

Any VAG dealer or independant VAG specialist should be able to perform this task for a minimal fee, you should expect to pay no more than half hours labour time for the process. where are you located? maybe i could come do it for you?

I am in derbyshire. so quite a distance from you.

My car is 2001 so does that mean it has the 2 sensors as in the picture rather than 2 seperate ones because if that is the case then this guy has ordered me the wrong parts i think.

Hi I'm new to this site and am currently having fun with my S3. My ABS/ESP light has been sporadically warning for months. Local Audi dealers are uncertain! what the problm is although they think its the sensors (as brilliantly outlined by NEXUS) does anyone know the approx cost of these sensors + time to fit. Dealers hav quoted £700 - now I suspect I know why the sofas as so comfy!

many thanks

I have a problem with ABS and ESP fault lights on.

I removed the steering wheel to fit a Cruise Control and must have messed

up the Steering Angle Sensor.

Have applied ABS Brakes (03) Login (11) enter 41068- Basic Settings (04)

Group 001. The first time it said "Steer angle sender compens not OK"

Now says "Group not found"

Also 3 DTC codes

00778 Steer Angle Sensor G85 0066 66-10 not matched Sporadic

00778 Steer Angle Sensor G85 00037 37-10 faulty Sporadic

01044 Control Module Incorrectly Coded 00035 35-00

Hi,

my car is now ok

In first you'll have to recode the modul
here
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/VW_Passat_%283B%29
first find your login and after your coding
when the code is ok you have acces to basic settings
