Over the last 6-8000 miles I've noticed that if I floor the throttle pedal my car accelerates slowly. If I ease the pedal back up to about 2/3 the engine picks up and accelerates much harder. The turbo seems to be working ok and I've checked the vacuum pipes and they appear to be fine. Fuel consumption has increased by about 5mpg around town(approx 37mpg) but remains more or less as it was on longer runs (approx 50mpg on motorways). If it was a petrol engine I would say that it was running lean but this is a 1.9TDI PD130 and my first diesel so I don't have much experience of them.
Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is?

Could be the throttle position sender on the throttle. You really need a code read to start you in the right direction.

Hiya mate, as martin said have it put on diagnostics, i had a focus tdci that had similar probs to yours and it was the turbo.
the variable turbo vanes had got made up with carbon soot and wouldnt throw out, but having said that it may be something completely different with yours..

Probably the Mass Air Meter (MAF).
