I've been getting a knocking sound from the shocks for a wee while now but everything seemed ok so left it as i'm unemployed (with the proviso i'd keep an eye on tyres etc).

A mate spotted tonight that the near side tyre is bald right down the centre (plenty of grip on the edges) and there's no way that it's been over-inflated.

I think i'm looking at replacing the front shocks and that tyre at a minimum, trouble is i don't know the part number required for the shocks.

My mechanic says he can get shocks for £40 each but i've a sneaky suspicion that they'll not be the sport suspension shocks but the standard ones (is it definitely these i'll need?)

Any info much appreciated guys, thanks in advance for your help.

Ian

Right mate, excellent post there thanks.

My car is not a quattro but a 2.0E badged 'sport'.

I'm assuming the top mount rubbers and bushes are different then but best to change both at the same time?

Not so sure my shocks are on their way out if the rattling is indeed coming from the bush / rubber but will look into which shocks I need and at what price (where's the best place to get them from?)

Last but by no means least, upon closer inspection (it was dark last night) my tyre is a LOT more worn on the inside and just bald in the middle with plenty on the outside (pics below, both tyres fitted at the same time).

Wheel alignment problem? (seems to track straight mind you, no pulling to one side)

cheers in advance, Ian.
