Hi all,
I have just bought my first vw and it is a passat highline estate 1.9 tdi 130 on a 04 with full vw service history and one owner, it drives great but the only thing bothering me is the mileage (120,000) now my friend is a vw nut and has had vw's all his life and he told me that 120,000 on a passat is nothing, I know that the days of cars being dead at 100,000 have gone, but if looked after how long will these engines go on for????????????

It depends whats been done already. A Cambelt is due or could have just been done. Iron octopus front suspension and tie-rod ends probably need replacing soon unless they already have. CV joints same, dampers probably too, unless it comes with receipts for these items, expect to have to do them as some point.

Hi,
The cambelt was done at 100,000, not to sure about joints and things but it drives very tight, no knocks and bangs, I know things will need doing in the end due to wear and tear, but what about engine, do these engines really go on and on???

As long as its serviced as per schedule this will double its mileage easily if not more.

Use the search engine and look at high mileage you will be surprised at some of the mileages racked up.

Yeah it has had its regular services, I think it was porbably a reps car or something, the only seat with any sign of wear is the drivers, the start of its lfe it was owned by a vw garage. it is a very clean car and seems like it has been very well looked after, might get in contact with the garage that serviced it for most of its life and see if they have kept the records of what has been done to it over the years.

Check the water pump was done with the cam belt if poss.
I do an oil change every 6k and other filters every 12k. Done 170'000 so far with no major problems.. Touch wood!

Barely run in at 120k, mine's got 226k on it and still runs as sweet as a nut. 60mpg if I take it easy.

As has been said before, regular oil and filters every 10k at the most. Look after it and it'll look after you. :D

I got replaced my last Passat with 210,000 on it, and now have an 03 TDI Sport with 94,000 on it, and it's as the other people say, barely run in

If it was serviced at dealers you can go into any dealer and ask for a complete printout of it's service history. That should tell you everything that was ever done to it, assuming they remembered to log it at the time.

Interested to know if suspension has been done at this mileage as wifes has 160k and has had no front or rear suspension work done and I am unsure as to whether I should take the precaution and do or not??

Regards,
Mike

I agree with the above.

I would rather over maintain a car than get left at the side of the M6 at 7 o'clock on a Friday evening.

Clean oil, let the car warm up before revving the nuts off it, and general checks of oil and water should see it carry on forever.

IMO, all modern cars will see 150K with absolutely no hassle, as long as they are serviced regularly (perhaps more often than the books suggests), I certainly won't be doing long life services for example.

I put 100K on a MK1 clio over 4 years (140K total - was written off when someone reversed into the side of it, I would still have it if not), and it NEVER broke down, hard to believe for a Clio I know, but it was serviced every 10K without fail, always started on first turn etc.

My arms were changed at around 130'000 but its a taxi so lots of speed hump/curbing use.
No need to change if all bushes/ball joints are ok. They'll be checked at MOT or you can check for split rubbers and excessive movement with a pry bar.

Mines on 172,000 miles. The gears 2nd/3rd are a bit crunchy. But it still pulls like a rocket up a drainpipe,

Make sure you give it montly "italian tuneups" take it to 4000 revs+ everynow and again. Blast out all the soot buildup.

These cars were made to be doing 120mph up and down the autobahn day in day out, service regular and don't baby the engine. 120,000 isn't even bedded in :biglaugh:

Thanks for the replys everyone, I can see what people mean now about how they go on, I took it on its first long run today, done norfolk to wigan today and back, a 500 mile round trip and I can say it was the most comfortable 500 miles I have done, it was returning minimum 45mpg with a heavy foot and 55-56 with a light foot, she really does run like a dream.
