This is how I fit my Clarion stereo in the Golf:

Using my multi tool (pictured) - I pried off the surround:

The back of the stereo - As you can see, there's the Aerial adapter in the back as well as the CAN-BUS adapter:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_dhNvt8h5OeE/Sf9R4RpuUnI/AAAAAAAACBg/buaz2vgYqEs/s800/01052009299.jpg

This is the back of my stereo with the CAN-BUS adapter connected and the relevant connectors all plugged in:

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_dhNvt8h5OeE/Sf9SNvL6zyI/AAAAAAAACBs/TqQ5hcluhQA/s800/04052009303.jpg

Everything all slotted in but Fascia not on:

This is the original thread from my Passat days which shows all the pieces and connectors from when I installed the stereo into my Passat:

The stereo has the added benefit that I can change the text colour to match. The audio improvement is remarkable - the sound that comes from the speakers is far clearer and fuller - and the OEM steering controls work with the stereo too :)

Hi

Great photos! So you started by prying off the top part or side portion of the fascia?

I want to diy my car as yours, just received mine yesterday. Enjoying the ride!!

Hi,

Thanks :)

And I started at the left hand side - Note, however, that there is a slight chance that you might break off some of the retaining clips.

If you look at the second photo down, you'll notice a gap in the middle between 2 retaining (silver) clips - that was where one of my clips was. It's still held firmly in place with that missing though so don't worry.

It does snap off - don't think it won't, but it's worrying when you have to apply that much force to get it off.

If you look at my photo, it might give you a good idea as to where to apply an appropriate level of force.

Hey James..... Can you still control the stereo via the steering wheel ?

james_tiger_woo
06-05-2009, 12:23 PM
Forgot to add that bit - Yes I can - The volume, station changing and mute buttons all work with my Clarion.

The CanBus adapter gives you the options for a Speed pulse (which doesn't work - not that I'm bothered), Reverse signal (if I had a screen and camera) and a connector for OEM steering control:

Yeah it is still in place however its unsteady and its wobbling not very securely placed. Looks like i need to go to the dealers to get a new face. what exactly are they called? fascia....

james_tiger_woo

If it's the VW surround that you snapped off in the first place to unscrew the torx screws, then you will indeed need to speak to the dealer - I think it's the fascia...

Thanks James. I used your excellent pictures to change out my 310 for an RNS-510.

Just curious where you placed the antenna for your nav unit.

Thanks for the guide!

Although I've ordered a RCD310, I am now seriously considering buying an RCD510 and swapping them over.

I'm guessing it should be as easy as unplugging the old one and putting the new one in?
What do you do with the security code?
Would the track names show on the Multifunction display?
Would you need to mess about in VAG COM?

And the big question: Will the MDI still work?

Since I'm on a lease and would buy the 510 on ebay, I guess I would swap back to the 310 and sell the 510 in two years time - it should still be worth at least £150 so would only cost me £250. Good buy?

Thanks for your excellent guide James. You’ve really got me thinking about going OEM now.

I too have gone for a RCD310 (car is built now and waiting in Emden), but rightly or wrongly I’ve ordered it with DAB. Does anyone know if the DAB is a separate unit plugged into the RCD310, which the RCD310 then see’s as another source, or is it actually built into the RCD310 unit? Either way how would one get DAB to work with a non-DAB OEM unit?

Any ideas anyone?

22-08-2009, 10:39 PM
Don't quote me on this but I'm sure I've read somewhere its a different unit and that's why others that didn't want to lose MDI can't now get DAB by just adding an additional unit. Haven't a clue where I read that or have anything to back it up.

Security code would need to be input
Track names should be shown
Doubt it
And yes, it should. I think. Maybe. Er. Any other 510 owners car to comment?

For the £250 you'd spend, you could probably get a better Sony/Clarion jobbie...

Make sure it's double din as I think single DIN in the Golf looks wrong.....

I think an OEM look is maintained by something smooth and sleek :)

I'll be keeping the OEM look by using an OEM head unit!

So does anyone know if the RCD-510 supports the MDI as when you spec it as an upgrade it says the MDI is removed and only specified the MDI if the Dynaudio is purchased.

"is says" - what says ?

VW dealer ?

VW brochure ? (if so, what edition / release date ?)

VW configurator ?

Sorry, the online configurator

EDIT: just checked the online configurator and can see that both options now no longer mention the MDI. They definitely did before as I remember calling VW UK who basically said to get the MDI I would have to get the Dynaudio pack. I guess they have fixed that then...

No, you don't need a double DIN stereo, but I'd consider it otherwise I think it'd look odd:

http://www.roksped.com/vw/files/rs/element/text_pic/1624353206.jpg

You'll lose the MDI functionality, but if you get a proper iPod stereo you'll be fine as I've done just that and run the cable into the glovebox thereby freeing up the (comedy) slot for an iPod.

As for compatibility - I still have use of the steering controls :)

I got mine from http://www.caraudiogiant.co.uk/ can't praise them enough.

What I'd do is go to an ICE specialist and find the one you want and then buy it from them ^^^ Or ask the ICE specialist if they'll match their price (they won't)....

Have you got the ipod adapter that comes with the car and does it work with the Clarion. Also another question if I may.
When you had the original 310 radio, can you add a bluetooth kit to that, because it says on the radio BT audio?

I've not tried the ipod adapter with my ipod/Clarion setup as I wasn't convinced it would work. Plus the Clarion stereo controls the ipod through the cable which is why I've not tried it.

And no, I had a Parrot kit, hence the BT audio message on the RCD300.

It's cheap tat though. It probably will sound very poor and not work very well. You get what you pay for. Cheap electronics are never good. It's like a tesco own brand dvd player/hifi/sat nav, you just wouldnt.

The brochure I have, dated 1st February 2010, states that the MDI is standard on all models except for the S and BlueMotion but it MUST be ordered in conjunction with RCD 310, RCD 510 or RNS 510 systems.

I have no idea of the quality of the ebay unit, but i do like the idea of it running windows mobile with a built in GPS with the SD card inputs enabling installation of whatever sat nav you want whether that be Tomtom, garmin. route66 or all of them...Tomtom is great for Uk but the only one that can be realistically used in Ireland is garmin.

The S comes with the 210 but you can upgrade to the 310 or the 510 with or without MDI.

Presently the 310 is an extra £95 and the 510 £470. With MDI the 310 is £340 and the 510 is £715.

Most impressed with your write up, but could you tell me what the Bluetooth mobile phone reception and functionality is like? I'm going off the idea of a 9060 kit with the stick on screen that looks very aftermarket!

I no longer have the Parrot kit I'm afraid - it stayed in the Passat as I couldn't get it out :(

Reception, however, was fine - it depends on your handset - not the BT kit.

Hope you told your insurance otherwise you may have invalidated your insurance and your warranty. Petty maybe but INS companies need no excuse and do apply the policies strictly these days!

TIAJust poking my nose in, but I too looked at the Parrot and Bury kits, but didn't like anything stuck on the dash, so I've gone for the genuine VW Bluetooth kit, that plugs into the 310 or 510 radios. The man is coming from vwcruise.com next week. It only works on the 310 if you have the multifunciton steering wheel and hi-line computer, because it needs the hi-line screen to display the phone book. On the 510 radios it displays on the radio. It ain't cheap though at £470 and services 95 per cent of mobile phones. We shall see!

james_tiger_woo
12-03-2010, 11:10 AM
£470? Wow - that's a lot...

Sticking things in the middle of the dash can be pretty untidy which is why I put mine over to the right - it worked better being in reach of my right hand and reduced stretching too:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_dhNvt8h5OeE/SEOvt69qCUI/AAAAAAAABMU/pV7rk3aeQ6U/s800/SL740153.JPG

Ok, it's a night shot, but that's the only photo I seem to have of the Parrot kit with the dash all lit up - the colours all matched up too :)

I recently bought a 2010 Golf 6 and loving it! I stay in South Africa. As you all know, the default radio is very borring.... I did some research on the internet and found some nice systems for quite cheap. FYI, please visit www.stopshop.co.za or www.szwaywell.com, there are many others as well, just Google.

In any case, i bought a system similar to the WD6050 from www.szwaywell.com. Have anyone of you tried/bought/installed some of these systems? In any case, I love the system, it has many functionalities, but I seem to have one problem which I can't explain. The unit works for about 2 days, then it wont start up anymore. I have isolated the problem, I need to do a power reset on the system, meaning either unplug and replug the radio's power or briefly removing the radio's fuse in the fuse box compartment, then it works fine again for another 2 days or so before i need to do the same. This is very annoying. Have anyone had a similar problem? What do you think could cause this and how could one solve this?

Do I need to do changes/modifications to the Canbus system?
