I have a 1997 A4 1.9TDI and there is a leak of fuel from the timing plug which is not loose. This leak only appeared after a recent change of cambelt. Would it have been necessary to adjust the timing when fitting a new cambelt and if so, why should the plug leak afterwards? The garage that did the cambelt change have not been very helpful and are suggesting that I need a new pump.

If the pump is leaking after the garage did work then they are legally responsible to look into it properly. I think you can simply replace the seals. Why would you need a whole new pump if it's only a seal!? If you get the garage to look at it for you then they will probably just suggest a new pump again to get the money out of you, which sucks.

I thought I would get opinions from a couple of diesel injection specialists. The first one seemed to want to make a big fuss - removing pump, stripping down, etc. The second quickly diagnosed a leaky pump head seal (this is what the timing plug screws into). This pump head needs a special tool for removal. The job was done with the pump in situ for one hour's labour and the fuel line seals were also replaced. I now know where to go in future. Its still a mystery as to why this leak developed in the first place.
