Hi,
I own a 'V' Reg 1999 1.9TDI. yesterdat it failed to start after initially turning over. It sounded like the battery was flat.
My mate came and tried to jump start me but the starter motor just clicked.
I called the RAC and the guy told me the starter motor was U S.
I bought a new one tody and fitted it however it still makes the clicking noise but does not turn over. The battery is fully charged.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Try turning the side lights on then turn the starter switch. If the lights go out or down to very dim when the switch is operated then the battery is probably US (it takes a lot of juice to turn a diesel engine so jump starting from another vehicle won't always work). If the lights stay the same brightness with the switch turned then there is no juice being taken by the starter circuit so suggest you check all connections, cables and earth straps. Clean the battery connections too. If the lights dim a bit with the switch operated then normal juice is being taken so you need to check that the engine will turn manually, that is, it isn't seized up. Hope this helps. If it doesn't you need to call someone in.
