Hi, just acquired a MK 5 2.0 GT Tdi with 41k miles. My question is, does the engine have a cam belt or timing chain and when should it be changed?

It's a 2005 140bhp, when does it need changing?

needs changing at 4 years or 60K. so if its not been done then best to get it done soon ;)

You will see lots of post about timming belt change intervals, but it will cost around £400 at a dealership, but if it breaks it can cost £3k to fix.

my service manual states that the interval is 80k for the 2.0 TDI, which this is, and 60k for the 1.9TDI. Unless they changed them as mine is an 04 plate 140?

VW recommend a 4 year interval if that comes up 1st, but it doesnt say this in the manual.

As I said before ther are lot of conflicting messages about cambelts

see this thread for all of them http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=52096

I still think 4 years or 60K is the safest route and as sated £400ish to do is better than £3K+.

as the rob man says better to be safe than sorry :p and the norm is 60k miles or 4 years.

try getting a quote from a vw approved repair centre, they are usually 50% cheaper (labour) than dealers.

They have cambelts and the change intervals are 180000kms per factory spec but as a mechanic myself I would still use the old spec and change it at 120000 or five years to be on the safe side! VW can say 180000 because by that time it will be long out of warranty so if it then snaps it is the owners problem! VW here in NZ does just that with imported VWs as opposed to the NZ new models.

180,000 kms.... thats high!!

60k miles is best or 4 years...
