I have a 2002 Passat S which is base model. In the centre panel it has a Climatronic control at the top and a Gamma Cassette unit immediately below it. Below that is cubby hole. I want to install a second user VW CD player and would like to know if it's possible just to change the front trim panel or do I need to do more and replace other plastic bits behind it to comodate the additional CD player unit ?

I belive higher spec models had the correct trim panels but this lowly beast definately needs modifying as the cubby hole and trim are much smaller than the CD unit!

Anyone done this before ? - what needs to be changed or purchased from a breaker / dealer ? Many Thanks

You will need quite a few other parts too If you have the cubby hole version.
A frame bracket (in green circle), and to cut the dashboard with a red hot craft knife or dremel. (I prefered red hot snap off knife). If you look at the photo below, look into the hole ans see where the plastic has been cut out.

Thanks for the respnse Snapdragon....so I fully understand is the front trim panel and "rear bit" as in your diagram is all I need? I can probably get that from a breaker. What's with the "red-hot craft knife" if I have the correct bits? Presdumably the climatronic unit gets relocated to the bottom (assuming the wires will be long enough to reach!) You would have thought VW would have made it easy :(

Yes, in 2002-2003 it changed so that double-DIN was the default.
Before that, there is no seperate frame behind there, just sort of 'shelves' moulded as part of the dashboard into which the radio and climate were inserted.
These have to be cut out and the frame bolted in.
It sounds hard, but as long as you have the instructions, it's not so bad. The only thing is it's not reversible. I got all the parts from the dealer for about £50.
I will see if I have a PDF at home, there used to be images on the web, but they are no longer there.

Ok Cool - thanks for that. I have managed tonight to look at some brochures for the 2002MY passat My base model S one seems the only one to have a lower cubby-hole, the higher spec ones seem to have 2 single DIN units (Gamma and CD)but I guess they are on top of each other effectively making it a double DIN !! I was kinda hoping there was a non-permanent option where you only need change the outer trim frame without making the full-on permanent modification!

Thanks and regards.
