Been covered a few times on here, my understanding is that you have to retract the pistons electronically, i.e. through a vagcom or something.

I just had new pads and discs fitted on the rear of my 55 tdi saloon at 75k miles. £222.00 from main dealer. My discs were ******* from about 6 months old, reckon they got salt on them early in their life and they never really recovered.

Hi, I think the forum automatically sensors swearwords and other banned terms, like referring to dealers as someone who may steal - http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=48541

You have to use vag-com to wind the handbrake motor back, not the pistons. The pistons then have to be pushed back. Remove old pads and fit new ones. Then you need vag-com to wind the handbrake motor back in by a set amount. The amount is the thickness of the new pads. If you haven't got vag-com or a basic electronic handbrake tool like those sold by Sealey etc, you can't do it. DO NOT TRY MOVING THE CALIPER PISTONS WITHOUT WINDING BACK FIRST.

It's all automatic. Just follow the vcds instruction screens. No measurements needed.

Tommyweaves, that's a great main dealer price. Mine were £230 from a VW independant...
