I am looking to get a new golf in a few months (nearly new) and was wondering which engine people believe is better? I currently have a mk5 1.9TDI (105 bhp) and travel about 12000 miles per year.

I have so far driven the 1.4 TSI which was a lovely drive (and a lot cheaper), however I don't know if the power will let me down compared to my current car?

1.4 TSI is certainly a lot better than the 1.9 TDI you have at the moment. It has about 15bhp extra and takes 2 seconds less 0-60, do not let the engine capacities confuse you!

IMO depending where you do most of your driving, you might be better of looking at the new 1.6 TDI 105. This will match your current 1.9 for power, and although not as fast as the 1.4 TSI, it will be more fuel efficent and equally smooth.

To be honest, the more power it has, the better, however I do not want to compromise fuel efficiency too much either. My current mk5 golf does 58mpg when I last calculated it.

I also quite fancy the GT, which I gather only comes in 1.4 petrol, or 2.0 Diesel. Which I suppose, then puts the 122ps out of the running.

The main thing I like about the 1.9 diesel I have, is the low down power it has, and I am worried that the new petrol models will not compare.

There is 200nm torque on the 122PS 1.4, and its all at the bottom of the rev-range, so pleanty enough, won't feel any slower than your 1.9.

I was speaking to someone recently who changed his 2.0 TDI 140 Leon for a 1.4 TSI 122 Golf and he seemed quite happy with the performance and torque.

Best advice is to test drive them all. If you want the same economy you have at the moment then the 1.6 TDI 105 or 2.0 TDI 140 will be the best choice. However I personally much prefer the petrols, the TSI 122 is a gem and selling very well. Although the diesel does more mpg, you have to remember it will cost more in the first place and diesel fuel also costs more.

As above - consider the mileage you do before considering a Diesel - I do about 25k a year so a Diesel works for me, but if I only did 15k, then the petrol makes sense.

I had a similar dilemma when choosing our new car. I drove the 122 tsi first and loved it, plenty low down grunt and made quite a nice snarl under hard acceleration. However coming from a clio 197 i did think that over time it would be too slow, so i then test drove the 110 diesel thinking that if i wasnt going to get the performance i would at least get amazing fuel consumption. Test drove it and instantly new the 122 tsi was far and away the better unit. No gaping hole in the performance that you get in the 110 diesel before the torque kicks in and even then the tsi felt much quicker. Was going to try the 140 gt diesel but i didnt what to spend the extra money when i knew the 122 tsi was so good.
