Hi, when starting the car the alternator/ancillary belt seems to be making a loud squeaking noise, this also happens when the revs go over 2000rpm and gets louder in any gear. I put WD40 on the alternator pulley which stops the squeaks for a while, then it comes back…. I have been told not to do this as the oil will go on the belt and make it slip. What is making the squeaking noise? is it the belt, the pulley or the tensioner?

Thanks

More than likely the belt, could be a pulley but you'd have to take the belt off and briefly run it to work this out....like i said though more than likely the belt, take it to a garage?

Belts usually squeal rather than squeak. My money is on the tensioner.

The tensioners do fail, I have a new Febi one in a box sitting next to me that I have to fit on my 03 VRS this afternoon.

I didn't know there was a differance in terms of sound between a squeel and a 'squeeks for a while'....Would like to know the outcome of this.
