Just been in car with new 8GB ipod nano, plugged lead in which dealer supplied, plugged ipod in pressed media on stereo and hey presto it worked, really is a doddle, and enough room in arm rest to hide it all away, dont think i will bother with cds anymore.

There is a lead plugged in under the armrest with a usb end on, but it wont connect the ipod, VW know about this and make sure you ask for the lead, even if you dont plan on using a ipod, and its free.

You just use the radio controls to navigate to what you want, so you dont have to touch the ipod, just put it under armrest and shut it away

I spoke to my dealer the other day and he also admitted that VW were aware of the issue and had a bag full of IPOD leads stuffed away in his desk should a customer require one AT the time of delivery.

Otherwise £64 after the event !!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Slightly off topic but can anyone who has their MK6 confirm whether an ipod 30gb video (same size as current classic) will fit in the armrest when connected?

If it doesn't guess I'll have to buy a Nano :(

I would have liked the classic, but a bit out of my price range, i think it should fit, but if you could get someone with one and try it before you commit to one. i was going to leave mine hid away in car when on hols etc, but i bet the insurance wouldnt cover it if it got stolen.

No - mine doesn't work :( Even though when ordering I asked if it would...

Back to the lease company for answers methinks....

Fits fine bit of a pain navigating through thousands of tracks with the RCD 310 though, as only able to jump one track at a time as far as I can see is it any more user friendly on the RCD 510 anyone?

Its very easy to navigate through the 510. However, if you have 1000's of tracks its wise to have a good directory structure.

Directory structure is pretty good, but lots of artists with only a couple of tracks, the RCD 310 screen isn't good to look at in daylight and the soft button labels are hard to read, so it seems a little dangerous to use while driving playlists work well and having track info on the driver display is excellent, I suspect an upgrade is approaching, I wanted the RCD 510, but could get the car with standard RCD 310 in a week as opposed to a factory order so was impatient and my old car was dying infront of my eyes £800 from VW though, may look to evilbay!

Thanks for the heads-up about the cable iallen. I too thought there was just the USB cable. A call to the dealers and 2 days later the i-pod cable arrived in the post. I can't understand how they are 'forgetting' to put the in the cars.

You can get one (albeit not a VW one) on ebay for about £10 plus delivery

True but they are supposed to be supplied with the car, you shoudlnt have to pay extra just because the dealer forgot to bundle the cable at pdi.

Does anyone know if it's possible to install the media-in plug in a 510 after sale?

Thanks.

In what way do you mean?

If the car dosent have media-in already you can buy it seperately and feed the cable through to the glove box.

MDI can be purchased from here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Media-In-MDI-Interface-RCD310-RCD510-RNS510-ipod-usb_W0QQitemZ170342888282QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Aud ioVideoElectronics_PortableAudio_MP3PlayerCarKits? hash=item27a93a335a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1683%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

I have an iphone and this fits in the armrest. Bit of a pain adjusting cables but fits quite easily. Dealer wasn't for offerin up the lead first off so thanks for the heads up on that and they also weren't for programming car to auto lock (anti hijack) seemed to pretend they didn't know what i was talking about.

RCD310 radio is a bit tricky at first to navigate round the ipod with but so long as you are at the top of the directory tree i use the tuning know to navigate to the albums folder and route through it that way!! I'm sure after a week or 2 playing with it i will get the hang of it but i literally picked it up on Thursday and went to silverstone Friday so the wife has had it all weekend.

One thing it does say on the iphone is that it doesn't recognise the attachment (car) and is apparently tempremental (with her) ok with me.

Further investigation required.

I had the same problem with the iPhone saying accessory not supported, but that just means you might get some interference and the phone may not charge. The actual iPod functionality with the stereo will still work.

Alternative way to use it would be to connect the iPhone to the 3.5mm aux-in socket (if your golf has that fitted) and then just control the iPod function from the iPhone itself, rather than the RCD310.... if that makes sense!
