Hi all. I am thinking about buying an Audi 1998 R Reg A6 1.8T SE with 79,000 miles and service history. I was hoping someone could give me advice as to the price I should expect to pay (it is a private sale). Also, this will be my first Audi and would like to know if they require a timing belt change at 80,000 (and if so, how much this is likely to cost?). Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

I own a 1998 A6 1.8T SE. I bought it 5 years ago at 67,000 miles-it is now on 149,000. I believe the belt needs changing every 75,000 miles (mine is due a second replacement very soon). I am not a mechanic but I know that age may also be a factor so if the Audi is running on the original belt get it changed ASAP.
Changing the belt on an A6 can be time consuming so it won't be cheap. A main dealer may be expensive too, so get a quote from a reliable local garage.
Check the Parkers guide on the web for price- my guess would be £2,000 tops. The A6 is now the wifes runabout-I replaced it with another A6 (diesel) last September. Although it is showing signs of age it still drives well-no rattles or squeaks...do check for oil consumption though! I regularly have to top it up every 1000 miles.

Highly recommend the purchase. I've a 1998 1.8T, got at 75,000 now has 240,000 miles. I've just buggered the turbo, but until now only needed a head gasket at 125,000 and the ABS ECU needed an electrical repair some while ago. Can't ask for more!
